Thank you Big Red Sports and Imports

Posted by LL Cool C | Posted in Sports | Posted on 16-12-2008

Sam Bradford with Heisman TrophyOn August 7th, 2006, Sports Illustrated writer Stewart Mandel wrote an article titled Bomar scandal will rock Sooners in 2006 and beyond, referring to the car dealership Big Red Sports and Imports, and the employment of Rhett Bomar. How prophetic of him.

At the time everyone hated Big Red Sports and Imports.  No one wanted to buy a car from them, the local sports talk radio station buzzed with hate towards them, and we even lost a mulleted fixture of car commercials.  Many were giving up on the OU football team for the next few years and could just picture Mack Brown laughing down in Austin.  It was a sad sight.

In stepped a red shirt freshman quarterback, the next year, that would hopefully be able to at least carry the team while they figured things out.  After all the next 3 to 4 years had been put on Rhett’s right arm.  Not only did this red shirt freshman “at least” carry the team, he led them to a Big 12 title and a BCS bowl game.  Things were looking up.  The pain that Rhett and Big Red Sports and Imports left in peoples hearts was beginning to fade.

This year while Rhett was down enjoying Sam Houston State University, visions of National Championships danced in Sooners’ heads.  This year Sam Bradford was the man and all of Sooner Nation was relying on his right arm.  He did not let us down.  Through smart thinking and laser locked throws, Sam Bradford took the Heisman trophy from two other quarterbacks and the Sooners are going back to play in the National Championship.  It’s funny how Heisman trophy’s, Big 12 Championships, and playing in the National Championship game can heal wounds.

That is why I would like to say Thank you Big Red Sports and Imports.  I know you had this in your master plans the whole time.  A sort of cleaning house, if you will.  Who are we to question your judgement on which college players you want to pay and who you don’t.  You had us in mind the whole time.  We are sorry for getting mad at you and calling you names.  We really didn’t mean it.  We will now put you back on our list of places we can purchase cars from.  We just have one little request though.  Please stay away from Sam Bradford at least for a little bit longer. Okay? Deal.

OKC Thunder: Oklahoma City's new NBA team name

Posted by LL Cool C | Posted in Sports | Posted on 03-09-2008

Today at 5pm CST the Oklahoma City will have the name of their new team officially announced.  Too bad I just announced it early.  In this picture from the NBA Store shows what the new logo will look like.  Like me you are probably saying “Surely this is for the non-existent WNBA team or is there to throw people off of the real logo design.”

Because of the few slip ups that have happened on the NBA.com website and pictures that have been circulating it looks like Thunder is the name and this is the logo that will be used.  It is all the rage to have a new logo to sell more merchandise, so hopefully this one will only be around for a few years and then they can get another one done.  I hope the drafts of other logos that were discarded because of this one are never released because I will probably like those a lot more.

I am hopefull that the jerseys will make up for the bad logo.  I really want to like this logo.  I just can’t.  Anyone else have these same feelings?

Michael Phelps lives up to the hype

Posted by LL Cool C | Posted in Sports | Posted on 16-08-2008

Not since Michael Vick’s dog Boom-Boom won back-to-back Atlanta dog fighting championships has one man or beast lived up to the hype of Michael Phelps. Winning eight Olympic gold medals is impressive, but to do it in one Olympics is simply amazing. Jason Zimdars, a local celebrity, said “Wow that is neat, did you hear Brett Favre got traded?” when asked about the feat.

Phelps had everyone watching the Olympics this year. They wanted to know if he could do it. Stephen Vandervort said, “I Brightkited right when he won so that I can look back in the future and remember where I was at that moment. See, here is a picture of the T.V. I was watching.”

During an interview after the race Phelps was asked his Michael Phelps Winsfavorite memory and he was speechless. He said that the Olympics as a whole is what he would remember. Justin Boeckman said that he already had a Phelps website made that has in his own words, “Michael Phelps hidden in white text at the bottom of the page written 46 times so that I can get it ranked really high!”

It could be shear talent or talent and technology combined that has helped all of these world records to be broken by Phelps and company. The new Speedo Racer suits seem to be helping everyone. “Those suits are simple, black and real clean,” stated Dustin Evans, “I was yelling Git-R-Done at Phelps the whole time.”

This may be a feat we never see again in our lifetime. I am glad Michael Phelps lived up to the hype and won 8 Olympic gold medals in one Olympic games. Congrats, and thanks for making this a fun Olympics to watch.

Favre Fan Protest

Posted by LL Cool C | Posted in Sports | Posted on 10-08-2008

A fan of Brett Favre just created a website to help show the Green Bay Packers it was a mistake to trade away Brett Favre.  The site says, “Let’s show Packers management that they made a mistake, trading away the best player in franchise history.”

The premise behind the site is to get people to buy a New York Jets Brett Favre jersey and wear it to the games.  There will still be green all around in the stadium, but it will be the wrong green.

As the http://www.favrefanprotest.com website says, “Together we can change the green in Green Bay!”

Oklahoma City Thunder: Is this the new NBA team name in OKC?

Posted by LL Cool C | Posted in Sports | Posted on 22-07-2008

KOCO is reporting that there sources say the name of the new Oklahoma City NBA franchise will the the Oklahoma City Thunder.  This goes against a Jason Zimdars post that leaked the name as “I love this basketball team.“  Either way Oklahoma City Thunder sounds like a WNBA team to some.

I personally think this is appropriate for the people that sit up in cloud city, the upper sections properly named loud city.  “I don’t think the name is scary enough,” stated Stephen Vandervort “People don’t run with thunder like the do with the Bulls.  Running with the bulls will scare anyone, so will swimming with sharks, but that is for another story!”

A jersey design scheme and colors are yet to be announced, but it will be intersting to see if they go with a classic, retro, or some kind of combination of both.  Many eager Oklahomans wait for the official name to be announced so they can begin to purchase merchandise and season tickets.

Seattle has a bad week

Posted by LL Cool C | Posted in Sports | Posted on 02-07-2008

Seattle is having a bad week.  First Starbucks announced it was closing down 600 Starbucks coffee shops.  Now their NBA team is gone.  There are things that could make it much worse, but this was not a week they will soon forget.

Clay Bennett and company from Oklahoma City won a ruling today that allowed them to break their lease with the city and move the team to Oklahoma City.  Under the agreement, Seattle will keep the SuperSonics’ name and team colors.  Now the scramble in OKC occurs for a team name, colors and logo.  They need this soon so that they can begin to make the merchandising revenue off of sold shirts, jerseys and all other random things that a logo get’s put on.  They also need this so they can begin to sell season tickets and get Oklahomans hyped up!  For more information on Oklahoma City’s new basketball team you can visit their wikipedia page.

The 600 stores that will be closing are their lowest performing shops.  Approximately 70 percent of the stores being closed have opened since the beginning of fiscal 2006.  The stores are not known yet, but this is not good for the Seattle based company.  For some this is some poetic justice because the Starbucks chairman Howard Schultz  headed the group that owned the SuperSonics from 2001to 2006.

Seattle, it will get better.  You still have tons of Starbucks and someday you will get a team.
